Bridge overweight vehicle permit is for all vehicles that wish to exceed the maximum allowable weight on any County owned bridge. Any vehicle exceeding 40 ton (80,000 lbs) must fill out a permit request form to cross any county bridge. In addition, any vehicle with a gross weight exceeding a posted bridge weight restriction must fill out a permit request form to cross posted County Bridges. Please note that permits may also be required from the State, or from the local municipality.

There are no exemptions, as stated under Section §4902(a) of the PA Vehicle Code. See below regarding fire trucks.

Fire truck non-exemption from bridge weight restrictions:

Per the PA Vehicle Code, 75 Pa.C.S. §4902(a), the exemption for fire apparatus from posted weight restrictions in Section §4906 does not supersede bridge weight restrictions. In addition, Section §4906 refers to "highways" whereas Section §4902 refers to "bridges and highways".

For vehicles exceeding the posted weight or other load capacity restrictions, an Application Form must be filled out for approval to cross the bridge. One form is required for each bridge and each vehicle. The completed form(s) should be sent to the Mercer County Bridge Department for review and processing, along with a "Certificate of Liability Insurance".

The form for application for oversize / overweight vehicle permit may be downloaded from this page. The form may be mailed, faxed or emailed to the Mercer County Bridge Department. Please allow up to 10 days for review and processing.

Permit fees will be determined, and you will be advised if we are able to issue a permit. Permits will be released upon payment. Payment may be made by cash, check, or credit card. Please be advised, that if paying by credit card, a credit processing fee will be assessed by the credit card processing company which will be in addition to the permit fee.
