  • The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is the state agency largely responsible for administering Pennsylvania’s environmental laws and regulations. Its responsibilities include: reducing air pollution; making sure our drinking water is safe; protecting water quality in our rivers and streams; making sure waste is handled properly; supporting community renewal and revitalization; promoting advanced energy technology; and helping citizens prevent pollution and comply with the Commonwealth’s environmental regulations. DEP is committed to general environmental education and encouraging effective public involvement in setting environmental policy.

Earth 911

  • Earth 911 is a comprehensive communication site for the environment.  The site includes: environmental hotlines, web sites, and nationwide information sources.
  • Use this site to find community-specific information on recycling, locations to dispose of hazardous household waste, composting, conserving energy, improving air quality, and more.  Includes a special section for kids.


  • EnvioLink Network is a non-profit organization which provides links to thousands of online environmental resources.  For recycling links, click on “Waste Management”; “Recycling” is a subtopic on the Waste Management page.


  • The mission of the Environmental Protection Agency is to protect human health and the environment.  EPA works to develop and enforce regulations that implement environmental laws enacted by Congress. EPA is responsible for researching and setting national standards for a variety of environmental programs, and delegates to states and tribes the responsibility for issuing permits and for monitoring and enforcing compliance.

Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful

  • Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful is the result of two organizations with similar missions joining together to achieve a common vision, a clean and beautiful Pennsylvania. In 2010, PA CleanWays (1990) and Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful (2003) merged to become the new Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful whose mission is empowering Pennsylvanians to make our communities clean and beautiful. Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful is the state affiliate of Keep America Beautiful, Inc., the nation’s largest volunteer-based community action and education organization.

National Recycling Coalition

  • A membership organization of recycling professionals and advocates dedicated to maximizing recycling.

  • Members assist volunteers and property owners to clean and keep clean areas and roadways affected by illegal dumping.  Coordinates special collections for appliances, batteries, fluorescent lights, electronics, paper, and tires.

 Resources Council

  • The Pennsylvania Resources Council is the Commonwealth’s oldest citizen action environmental organization. Recognized as a state and national leader in waste reduction and recycling, the remainder of PRC’s work focuses on litter and visual blight prevention, watershed awareness, and composting.

  • The Professional Recyclers of Pennsylvania (PROP) is a non-profit association of recycling professionals dedicated to promoting and enhancing the interests of recycling, recycling programs, composting, and composting programs in Pennsylvania through education, information exchange, technical support, applied research and coordination of recycling industry initiatives. PROP’s goal is to establish and improve information networks among programs and between public and private sector recycling professionals.
